(Le texte en franìais sera disponible dÅs que j'aurais un peu de temps ou que la demande le justifie.)
As promised here is the first part of my french (canadian) Word File. There are about 900+ frequently used french words and names.
My complete word file is about 4000+ words, but 900 words is a practical limit with the Newton as you get frequent out of memory errors with a bigger Word File, even with a hundred KB INTERNAL memory available (As you would have if you use a Flash Card). It would help if Apple would allow a dynamic system heap on the Newton with a new release of the OS...
I compiled the complete list by cleaning up 2 years worth of documents, memos and letters, sorting the words, getting the unique ones, erasing numbers, passwords etc. and checking the words with a spelling checker...
Now for the transfer to the Newton:
What you need at first
1 A Newton
2 About 50 K INTERNAL memory available, not on the card
3 Either the "Newton Connection" application or NDDD
4 Autodict.pkg (In the packagages section of NEWTON at CompuServe)
Next all you have to do is as follows
A) If you have the "Newton Connection" application
1.1 Open the file "Dicco.txt" either with Teachtext, Word or Excel
1.2 Open "Newton Connection"
1.3 Syncronize your Newton
1.4 Switch to your open "Dicco.txt" file
1.5 Copy the stuff
1.6 Switch to "Newton Connection"
1.7 Open the NotePad application
1.8 Create a new note
1.9 Paste the data
2.0 Select all
2.1 Change the font to 9 points
2.2 Close the Window
2.3 Syncronize your Newton -Now the word list gets down to the Newton.
2.4 Download the application "Autodict.pkg" if you haven't already done it.
2.5 Follow the instructions that are coming with "Autodict.pkg"
There are several NotePad pages full of words in the Newton. You have to transfer them all:
for all NotePad pages full of words
repeat
select some lignes of words of the NotePad;
drag it into the AutoDict window;
tap on the "add to Wordfile" button;
erase the text in the AutoDict window;
switch to the note pad;
until the NotePage entry is empty;
end for;
2.6 Try it out.
B) If you have NDDD, for dowloading the file to your Newton please follow the instructions coming with NDDD.
Once the file in the Newton, execute steps 2.4, 2.5 and 2.6.
Its a bit of work (about 10 minutes to get anything done) but it's really worth it and there is nothing else to do for now until :
A) Apple documents a bit more the internals of the Newton
B) Makes the Newton Development Kit more affordable to have more developers work on new packages because usually the big software compagnies aren't those who give us these really new and creative applications. They have to minimize the risk and are only developing if there is a really big market.
C) Gives us a real multilingual Newton.
Please give me some feedback via CompuServe or the Internet.
A postcard or small amounts of $$ are appreciated because I am unable to shell out this whoppy 700 US$ for the Newton Development Kit (Those who don't need their Newton Development Kit or would encourage development on the Newton, you can always send one to my adress...)
